CELEBRATING THE FISHERMAN'S 134TH BIRTHDAY



Bodrum Maritime Museum, under the auspices of Bodrum Municipality Culture Inc., commemorated the 134th birthday of Cevat Şakir Kabaağaçlı, renowned as "The Fisherman of Halicarnassus". Kabaağaçlı's multifaceted contributions as an artist, translator, author, guide and historian were honored through various events.


The inauguration of "The Sea Land Exhibition", where 22 artists from Istanbul, London, Lisbon, Zurich, Nsyros, Baku and Bodrum showcased their works, coincided with the award ceremony and exhibition of the "Global Merhaba Day" International Logo Competition. Hosted by Alp Kırşan, the event was broadcasted live from Bodrum Sea Museum on April 17th, at 18:00, commencing with opening remarks.

Among the attendees were the Acting Mayor Emel ÇAKALOĞLU, Deputy Mayor Yaşar ÇELİKKAN; Aslan KORKMAZ, the district director of national education; Tuncay AYDIN, the Director of Bodrum Regional Port; Zeynep GÖZTEPE, the General Manager of Bodrum Municipality Culture Inc.; Selen Cambazoğlu, the Director of Bodrum Maritime Museum; Orhan DİNÇ, the Chairman of Bodrum Chamber of Maritime Trade; Erdem AĞAN, the Vice President of Bodrum Chamber of Commerce, the Chairman Mustafa DEMİR and the Vice-Chairperson Rukiye YILDIRIM of TÜRSAB Bodrum Branch (Association of Turkish Travel Agencies); Erdoğan BAŞEĞMEZ, the Chairman of Bodrum Union of Chamber of Merchants & Craftsmen; Semra BİLGİLİ, the Vice-Chairperson of Bodrum Sailors Association; Hakan AKYÜZ, the Member of Bodrum City Council Executive Board; Selim Yiğit, the Vice President of Turkish Archaeologists Association, members of the Association for the Support of Contemporary Living, members of the Atatürkist Thought Association Bodrum Branch, members of the Blue Aegean Sea (Mavi Ege Denizi) Rotary Club, artists, academicans, press members and citizens. Additionally, the grandchildren of the Fisherman of Halicarnassus, Joanne Aliye Noonan Kutup, Diana Deniz Noonan, Sibel Kabaağaçlı and Derya Kabaağaçlı, were among the attendants of the event.

Mayor Aras Sends Congratulatory Note

Ahmet Aras, the Mayor of Muğla Metropolitan Municipality, extended his greetings to the attendees, expressing pride in commemorating The Fisherman of Halicarnassus' legacy and emphasizing the importance of preserving Kabaağaçlı's contributions to Bodrum and the international community.

In her opening remarks, Acting Mayor Emel ÇAKALOĞLU highlighted Kabaağaçlı's significant impact on Bodrum's development and stressed the importance of upholding his legacy as a thinker, author, poet, guide, historian and environmentalist.

The Global “Merhaba” Day Gets Its Logo

The Global “Merhaba” Day International Logo Competition, held as part of Kabaağaçlı's birthday celebrations, received submissions from 583 designers worldwide. The winning logo, designed by Necip GÜLBAHAR from Ankara, will serve as the emblem for future “Merhaba” Day events.

At the award ceremony, which took place with the support of communication partners and sponsors and was advised by graphic designer and academician Ömer Durmaz, supporters who could attend the event presented their awards to the winners.

22 Artists Meet at the Sea Land Exhibition

The Sea Land Exhibition brought together artists from various cities to showcase their works at Bodrum Maritime Museum. Curated by Canan Cürgen GÜLTAŞ, Elvan ERDİN and Züleyha ALTINTAŞ, the exhibition celebrated Kabaağaçlı's birthday with a diverse range of artworks inspired by the sea.

The exhibitions will be remaining open to the public until June 30, 2024, offering visitors the opportunity to explore the displayed artworks. Additionally, Genco GÜLAN's artwork "Restless Poseidon" (Huzursuz Poseydon) will continue to be exhibited in the sea in front of the ‘Mausoleum Exhibition Hall’ of Bodrum Municipality during the same period.
